The Best Coffee Alternatives? - Teri Cochrane

The Best Coffee Alternatives?

If you’re a coffee drinker suffering from IBS, heartburn, acid reflux or loose stools, it may time to shake up your coffee routine.

Here are my suggestions for coffee alternatives that may work better for your body.

Matcha

Matcha: Chock full of antioxidants, anxiety-soothing l-theanine and heart protective resveratrol, matcha is a delicious way to get your caffeine fix without the harsh acidity of coffee. You can find this popular green tea derivative in most grocery stores and coffee retailers. Try a matcha latte, or add it to your favorite smoothie at home for a kick of energy.

Mushroom Coffee

Mushroom Coffee: Four Sigmatic has a fabulous beanless “coffee” blend made with adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms designed to support cognitive function and reduce feelings of anxiety. This drink is caffeine free and perfect for anyone with a caffeine sensitivity who still wants that “get up and go” feeling without the shaky crashes or mood destabilization. Note: If you are mold-sensitive, mushroom coffee may not be the best option for you - stick to matcha or mate instead.

Bulletproof Coffee

Bulletproof Coffee: My dear friend, Dave Asprey, has pioneered a toxin-free coffee blend called Bulletproof Coffee that I drink everyday. Sustainably sourced and tested for molds and fungi, Bulletproof is an excellent alternative to standard coffees that may feed pathogenic loads or irritate mold sensitivities.

Yerba Mate

Mate: Yerba Mate is a South American tea blend that contains less caffeine than a cup of coffee and more than a standard cup of tea. Rich in antioxidants and hailed as a “purifying” tea, mate has been shown to help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and even lower blood pressure. If the acid in coffee irritates your gut, mate may be a pleasant alternative.
