The Best Foods For Your Liver

Drum roll please...Meet my favorite foods for liver detoxification!

There is a whole world of misinformation out there about which foods are truly supportive for the liver - so I thought I would narrow it down for you with some Wildatarian home truths.

Here are my top 6 truly good-for-you liver supportive foods:

Cilantro - Known as a heavy metal chelator, cilantro helps pull toxins from the body, reducing the toxic burden on the liver - this is why it’s one of the key ingredients in my personally formulated electrolyte powder, Wild-Lytes!

Artichoke - Celebrated by the ancient Greeks, artichoke leaf extract has been clinically demonstrated to prevent liver damage and to even promote the regeneration of new liver cells. A secondary benefit is that artichoke can stimulate bile production, the liver’s primary tool for ridding the body of toxins.

Milk thistle - A prickly plant written off by many as a weed, milk thistle contains an antioxidant compound called silymarin, which has been shown to help reduce inflammation in the liver, and even support cell repair. Milk thistle is commonly taken in supplement form, though teas and tinctures are also available.

Cucumber - Cucumber is a personal favorite of mine when it comes to liver support. Containing Vitamin A and soothing plant compounds called lignans, cucumbers are rich in high quality water, and alkalizing to the body. They support the liver by helping hydrate the GI system, helping to flush out waste and toxins.

Beets - Though the oxalate-sensitive should beware this red veggie, beets still make the list! Beetroot has been shown to increase enzyme activity and stimulate bile production. The antioxidant content of beets also promote healthy levels of inflammation and can help prevent oxidative stress & damage to the liver - key for our longevity!

Bitters - This digestive aid is made up of plants that stimulate the appetite and enzyme activity, and traditionally includes chicory, dandelion leaves and orange peel. By stimulating the release of enzymes from the pancreas, colon and liver, bile flow is increased when we consume bitters, helping the liver break down toxins and fats more effectively.
